About mounting a 3D scanner on a CNC-machine
Scantech 3D Scanner is easily mounted on any existing CNC machinery - small or big. We have several hundreds of installations all over the world. Size of scan is only limited to the working range of your CNC.
The Scantech 3D Scanner can be mounted on any 3-axis,5-axis or 3-axis turning lathe, thus allowing real 3D works on the object! Scantech's 3D Scanner is 10 times faster than a mechanical probe and soft or fragile models is no problem at all! On a 5-axis machine we can scan in three ways:
The five faces of a cube (3+2 axis scan):
...and do Cylinder scan by rotating around the model:

The system consist of the Scantech OneCam 3D Scanner and the SmartScanX application for scan, and a simple to use Copying CAD/CAM CARSO/Basic . Robust industrial communication allows up to 100 meter of cable to scanner. Connects to USB . Reads X-axis position from CNC for high precision scan. Manipulations: Size, Stretch, Crop and Smooth of scan. Milling: Four different tool shapes in any size, Rough out in Z, Rectangular or Elliptical boundary of cut. Neutral ISO-code post processor.
CARSO/DecimateExport of scans in STL-format It's also possible to purchase a Scantech 3D Scanner without one of our Copying CAD/CAM packages. In this case we include anl application called CARSO/Decimate. The purpose of CARSO/Decimate is export of scans in Stereo lithography format also known as the STL-file format to other CAD/CAM systems. The STL-file format is a very popular format for scan data exchange and most CAD/CAM system are able to read the format. STL-files are huge and not easy to manage for CAD/CAM system. Carso Decimate solve this problem by reducing the number of triangles in an intelligent way. To get fine details you must scan with a high resolution. In some areas the high resolution is not necessary if you have smooth or flat areas, so here points can be removed without loss of information. The method is called “Decimation” and will typically reduce the number of triangles to less than half of original number. Time to move on - contact Scantech on info@scantech.com
